Brazil itineraries
A few days in a city. A coast traveled slowly. A river that becomes the route. Start with the time you have and the Brazil you want to experience.
Find your routeTen ways into Brazil
These routes offer ten distinct starting points, from a Rio city break to journeys through the Amazon, the northeast and the south. The day counts include moving between bases: they are a framework to adapt to your flights and interests, not a promise that every connection operates on every date. Start with the experience that matters most, check its season, then choose an itinerary with enough full days around it. Use the overview below to compare the character of each trip. Once the sequence feels right, work through the destination guides and reserve the connections that make it possible.
Arrival, departure and changes of base are part of the trip. Mark them before allocating sightseeing days. A four-night stay generally offers three full days, with any useful time on arrival or departure as a bonus.
Rio’s beach weather, the Lençóis lagoons, Pantanal access and an Amazon lodge program do not share one national calendar. Let the most seasonal experience set the travel window, then adapt the city days around it.
Name the airport, bus station or boat landing for every transfer. Include the onward journey to the room. Leave a suitable margin when separate tickets, boats or long road journeys precede the international flight home.

01 · Rio in four days
Four days in Rio can hold a generous mix of beach life, historic buildings and the extraordinary setting, provided you choose a base that suits your daily routine. Give a clear-weather window to the mountains, another substantial part of the trip to Centro, and leave evenings for neighborhood restaurants or music. Ipanema, Copacabana and Botafogo create different starting points; pick one rather than changing hotels to sample them all. This is a city break, not a complete survey. Arrival and departure times decide whether four calendar days give you two or three full sightseeing days, so put the experiences you care about most first.
Use the clearest forecast window for Corcovado or Sugarloaf. If the mountains disappear into cloud, a museum, cultural building or neighborhood meal can lead the day instead. Avoid reserving every hour before you see the conditions.
A samba evening, a walk through the port area or a morning in Santa Teresa gives the trip more than a coastal outline. Put the evening and its return journey in the plan before committing to an early start.

02 · Rio, Paraty and Ilha Grande in twelve days
Begin with Rio’s neighborhoods and mountains, continue to Paraty’s historic streets and bay, then settle into an island stay on Ilha Grande. The sequence gives each place a different role: city life, a small coastal town and time reached by boat. Twelve calendar days include the arrival, two changes of base and the return to Rio. In our route, eleven nights divide into four in Rio, three in Paraty, three on Ilha Grande and one final night back in Rio. That final city night makes the departure day simpler and leaves room for one more evening before the flight home.
The usual overland connection from Paraty goes to a mainland departure point for an onward boat. Confirm the exact pier, sailing and island landing before paying for a transfer or a room. Abraão is this route’s island base.
Three island nights leave two full days for the conditions you find. A boat outing and a beach day can change order. Keep the longest excursions away from the day you need to return to Rio.

03 · São Paulo and Minas Gerais in ten days
Pair São Paulo’s scale and restaurant culture with a focused part of Minas Gerais. Start with several city days: historic Centro, Paulista’s museums and the food and streets of another neighborhood. Then choose a manageable Minas extension, using Belo Horizonte for its markets and as a practical gateway to one substantial excursion. Ouro Preto brings steep streets and historic churches; Inhotim offers a different kind of full day among art and gardens. Trying to fit both, several other colonial towns and long São Paulo stays into ten days quickly consumes the trip. Select the Minas experience that matters most before booking the connecting journey.
Ouro Preto deserves time to walk at its own pace, with hills and interior visits shaping the day. Inhotim is an outing to Brumadinho, not a museum in central Belo Horizonte. Keep its return journey visible in the plan.
Compare arriving in São Paulo and departing through Belo Horizonte with the time required to return to the first airport. Actual international and domestic schedules determine whether an open-jaw arrangement improves your trip.

04 · Salvador and Chapada Diamantina in ten days
Salvador and Chapada Diamantina offer a striking change of setting within Bahia. Begin with time for Salvador’s historic center, waterfront, Bahian cooking and a music evening. Continue inland for a landscape-led stay where a guide and the routes you choose shape the days. Ten days call for a focused Chapada base and a few well-chosen outings, rather than an attempt to cross the entire region. Lençóis is one useful starting point; other bases make sense for different trails and landscapes. Establish the practical road connection and the access for your preferred walks before deciding how to divide the nights.
A short viewpoint walk and a demanding multi-day route need different preparation. Discuss distance, terrain, heat, guide requirements and transport with the operator. Do not assume every celebrated waterfall is a simple day trip from the same town.
The city is a destination in its own right. Give its food, historic streets and cultural life time before or after the inland journey, rather than treating it only as the airport for Chapada.

05 · Recife, Olinda and Alagoas in ten days
Use Recife and neighboring Olinda for the urban half of the trip, then choose one coastal base in Alagoas for a different rhythm. Recife’s waterways and cultural buildings lead toward Olinda’s hillside streets, churches and views; neither needs to become a rushed stop between airports and a resort. On the coast, decide whether you want a town with everyday services, a quieter pousada stay or organized trips on the water. The right choice changes the road journey and how much you need a driver or car. Ten days work best when you move once between the city cluster and a selected stretch of coast.
Maragogi and the São Miguel dos Milagres area create different stays and are not interchangeable hotel addresses. Check the exact beach, nearby dining and transfers before committing. A beautiful room can be quite far from the places on your list.
Natural pools depend on tides, weather and operating conditions. Confirm permitted access with the provider and let the suitable window guide the outing. Keep another worthwhile plan for a day when the sea does not cooperate.

06 · Lençóis, the Delta and Jericoacoara in twelve days
This is a journey across distinct landscapes, with transfers that form a substantial part of the experience. Start by choosing how to explore Lençóis Maranhenses: Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro and Atins open different combinations of dunes, lagoons, river travel and local life. Continue toward the Parnaíba Delta, then finish on the Ceará coast around Jericoacoara. A twelve-day frame can connect them, but it demands a carefully arranged sequence and realistic expectations about time in vehicles and boats. Lagoon conditions are seasonal, while coastal wind and weather create a different calendar. Let the experience you most want determine the dates.
Ask for named overnight bases, vehicle types, baggage arrangements and what happens when conditions alter access. A price for the coastal journey should make clear which excursions are included and which days are principally transfers.
Moving between every Lençóis base can cost the time you hoped to spend among the dunes. Choose the access that fits your priorities, then preserve a substantial stay at the end so Jericoacoara is more than a final check-in.

07 · Manaus and the Rio Negro in seven days
Give Manaus time for its cultural buildings, markets and river-city setting, then continue to a carefully chosen forest lodge or boat itinerary. Seven days should revolve around one coherent river experience, with its transfers included in the overnight plan. Lodges reached from Manaus are spread across a large area, and the phrase Amazon lodge says little about the waterway, travel time or daily program. Ask where you will stay and what a normal day actually includes. Your choice should reflect whether you most want canoe outings, guided forest walks, birdwatching or simply time on the water with a knowledgeable local guide.
Compare arrival and departure hours as well as the number of nights. A package advertised as three days may contain a short arrival afternoon and an early departure. Choose a stay with enough full guided time to justify reaching it.
Look for observation that keeps animals wild and gives communities control over visits. Avoid handling wildlife for photographs. Ask who leads the activities, the group size and how the program changes with water levels.

08 · Belém and Marajó in seven days
Belém makes a rich starting point for Pará: riverfront markets, regional ingredients, historic streets and meals that deserve time. A Marajó extension introduces another landscape and island routine, reached through a crossing and an onward transfer rather than a quick city outing. With seven days, choose one island base and confirm how it connects to the port used by your sailing. Soure and Salvaterra are distinct practical choices. Split the stay around the experiences you want—food and culture in Belém, guided local outings and time on Marajó—while preserving a margin before the flight home. An extra transfer should earn its place in the route.
Ask for the mainland terminal, the island arrival point and the onward journey to your accommodation. A ferry ticket alone does not necessarily take you to the town where you are staying. Check luggage arrangements and service changes with the provider.
Belém’s ingredients and cooking are a principal reason to travel. Leave enough city time for a market visit and more than one regional meal, rather than placing all the food experiences on a hurried arrival day.

09 · Southern Pantanal and Bonito in nine days
Combine a southern Pantanal lodge stay with the clear-water activities around Bonito. These are complementary experiences with different access and booking needs: wildlife observation in the wetlands, then guided river and cave visits with controlled entry. Nine days favor a carefully chosen lodge and a small number of substantial Bonito outings, not a new excursion every few hours. Choose your gateway and ground transfers after identifying the lodge, because southern Pantanal properties cover a large area. Keep the journey between the two bases visible. This is a southern route; the jaguar-focused trips around Porto Jofre belong to a different, northern Pantanal journey.
Ask the lodge about habitat, season, guiding and typical activities. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. If jaguars are your overriding priority, compare the northern Pantanal plan rather than assuming every wetland lodge offers the same opportunity.
Activities can have assigned starts, equipment requirements and separate transfers. Book a sensible sequence with a local operator and ask about suitability for your swimming confidence and mobility before paying. Leave an afternoon free between major outings.

10 · Iguaçu, Curitiba and Florianópolis in twelve days
Start with the scale of Iguaçu, continue to Curitiba’s urban life and architecture, then finish with a chosen part of Florianópolis’s coast. Twelve days can give these three bases a proper place in the trip when the connections work, but it is not a short continuous coastal drive. Compare flights and overland alternatives using complete transfer days, not just the time in the air. At the falls, decide how much of the visit belongs to the Brazilian side before adding a separate border crossing. In Florianópolis, choose a base around the beaches and neighborhood routine you want, rather than planning to cross the island repeatedly every day.
An excursion to the Argentine side adds separate immigration, entry and transport requirements. Check these for every traveler and the passport being used. Treat it as its own day, rather than assuming the two park visits are one ticket or one entrance.
Florianópolis rewards time in one area, with outings chosen around conditions and traffic. Leave the last stretch open for the weather you get; a flexible beach day can be more enjoyable than a long list of distant stops.

Your next step
The most useful itinerary leaves room for the way you travel. Choose your overnight bases, keep the connections realistic and save a little time for the place that makes you want to stay.
