A city, a town and an island

Three places. Three different rhythms.

This route starts and finishes in Rio and uses twelve calendar days in Brazil, including arrival and departure. The eleven nights divide into four in Rio, three in Paraty, three in Abraão on Ilha Grande and one final night back in Rio. That gives you three full opening city days, two full days in Paraty and two on the island, with transfer days kept separate. It suits travelers who want culture, food and coast in one connected journey without adding a domestic flight. The final Rio night is deliberate: a boat crossing and a road journey are better completed before the day of an international departure. Adapt the first and last days to your actual flight times, and shorten the route by removing a base rather than taking a night from everywhere.

  1. 01
    Best fit

Choose this trip for a mix of city days, historic streets and time near the sea. It includes road travel and boat boarding, so confirm the practical access if you have limited mobility or are traveling with a lot of luggage.

  2. 02
    Choose the conditions you want

This coast can be wet at any time. Hotter summer months bring a greater chance of heavy rain; cooler months can still offer good coastal days. Keep the mountain visits and boat outings flexible, and check local conditions close to travel.

  3. 03
    Book the complete sequence

Confirm the Rio–Paraty road journey, the Paraty–mainland-pier connection, the boat to Abraão and the return to Rio. A service described simply as an Ilha Grande transfer needs an exact departure point and island landing.

Days 1–4 · Rio de Janeiro

Begin where the city meets the sea.

Choose an opening base that makes ordinary days easy. Ipanema offers a beach neighborhood routine; Copacabana and Leme create another long waterfront stay; Botafogo suits a different mix of dining and connections. Keep one hotel for these four nights. Plan three substantial city days with space around them, and change their order to use the clearest mountain weather. A historic-center day gives the trip an urban dimension beyond the view. Save an evening for music or a long dinner, but avoid putting an immovable early appointment after it. On the last city evening, confirm the next morning’s pickup, destination address and luggage arrangements for the road to Paraty.

  1. 01
    Arrive and settle in

Make arrival day about getting to the room and finding your local routine. Walk near your base if time and energy allow, then eat nearby. Treat a major attraction as optional; an overnight flight and an uncertain check-in time are enough to manage.

  2. 02
Give a clear day to the mountains

Choose Corcovado or Sugarloaf as the main visit and allow time for the complete journey, including entry and queues. If visibility is poor, swap with the city day. A relaxed beach walk later leaves room to enjoy the setting without adding another timed ticket.

  3. 03
    Go into the historic city

Build the day around Centro’s cultural buildings and streets, choosing one substantial interior visit. Continue toward the port area if it fits your interests and the available time. Have a specific route and return plan, rather than trying to cover every central landmark on foot.

  4. 04
    Find your everyday Rio

Use the last full city day for the neighborhood you most want to know: Ipanema and the waterfront, Botafogo’s food scene or Santa Teresa’s hillside streets. Add the second mountain attraction only if it is a priority and conditions work. Keep the evening suitable for the next day’s transfer.

Days 5–7 · Paraty

Trade the avenue for old streets.

Paraty changes the scale of the journey. Choose accommodation in or near the historic center if you want to step out for meals and evening walks; a more distant pousada needs a clearer transport plan. Three nights leave two full days, enough for the town and one well-chosen bay outing. The historic core rewards slow walking, but its uneven stone paving can be tiring and difficult for some travelers. Ask the property about the exact access from the vehicle drop-off to the room. Keep the bay day movable within the stay. A wet or windy forecast is a reason to revise the outing with the operator, not to force a boat trip because it sits in the itinerary.

  1. 05
    Travel from Rio to Paraty

Dedicate the day to the road journey and check-in. Choose a bus, shared transfer or private driver after comparing the complete hotel-to-hotel arrangement. Leave the evening for a first walk and dinner. Avoid prepaying an afternoon excursion that depends on a punctual arrival.

  2. 06
Spend a full day in town

Explore the historic center in manageable stretches, with time for an interior visit, local shops and a proper lunch. Return to the waterfront as the light changes. If mobility is a concern, arrange a route with a guide who understands the paving and your needs.

  3. 07
    Choose one bay experience

Book a boat outing that matches the group size, duration and style you want. Ask about boarding, shade, swimming stops and what changes in poor conditions. Prefer a few enjoyable stops to a long checklist. Confirm the next day’s road and boat connection before dinner.

Days 8–10 · Abraão, Ilha Grande

Let the island set the pace.

Use Abraão as the island base for this route. It brings accommodation, food and departures for many excursions together, while other Ilha Grande stays can require a different landing and an additional boat. Travel from Paraty to the mainland departure point arranged for your crossing—commonly Angra dos Reis or Conceição de Jacareí—then continue by the confirmed service to Abraão. Do not assume there is a direct scheduled Paraty-to-Abraão connection. Pack so that boarding and the walk to your accommodation are manageable. Once settled, let the weather and sea conditions determine the order of the two full days. Choose one longer excursion and keep the other day less structured, with time to enjoy the island close to your base.

  1. 08
    Connect road, pier and room

Allow the day for the mainland drive, the boat and check-in. Confirm which pier the driver uses and which sailing the booking includes. Ask the accommodation about the final walk or luggage help. Keep the first evening local and check the outlook with a responsible excursion operator.

  2. 09
Take a considered trip on the water

Choose a boat route appropriate to the day’s sea conditions and your comfort aboard. Ask about group size, time underway, shade and swimming arrangements. A famous beach or lagoon is not a promise of suitable conditions; let the operator explain the realistic options.

  3. 10
Leave room for the beach and forest

Choose a nearby beach or a trail suited to your fitness, with current local advice on access and conditions. A more ambitious outing toward Lopes Mendes requires planning for the walking, boat options and return. Settle tomorrow’s crossing and road transfer before the evening.

Days 11–12 · Return to Rio

Give the ending its own evening.

Return to Rio on day eleven and sleep in the city before the international departure. This protects the final day from the uncertainty of a boat crossing followed by a long drive. Select the return service with your exact Rio destination in mind: an airport-area hotel and an oceanfront neighborhood require different onward arrangements. If the schedule leaves a useful evening, choose a simple meal or waterfront walk rather than a distant event with a strict start. Keep the last morning flexible around the actual flight and check-out time. The final hotel night belongs in the original eleven-night budget, rather than appearing later as an unwelcome extra.

  1. 11
    Return before departure day

Take the confirmed boat to the mainland and continue to Rio with time for ordinary delays. Share updated arrival details with your hotel. Keep dinner near the room and enjoy the change back to city life; avoid treating an early boat arrival as guaranteed time for a major attraction.

  2. 12
    Leave from the right airport

Check whether your flight uses Galeão or Santos Dumont, the airline’s required arrival time and the current road outlook. Store luggage with the property only if that arrangement is confirmed. A last walk or breakfast is a bonus around the departure, not a reason to compress the airport margin.

Make the route work

The details between the stops.

Reserve the connections as a sequence. The exact pickup, landing and final walk often matter more than the headline travel time.

01

Time

Understand the twelve-day count

The route uses eleven hotel nights and includes arrival and departure. If your flight reaches Rio late on day one, you still have three full opening city days. If you have only ten days, choose Rio with either Paraty or Ilha Grande and keep a sensible return margin.

02

Road

Choose the transfer style

Compare a scheduled bus, shared transfer and private driver using the whole journey. A bus may require separate station transfers; shared services can include other pickups; a private vehicle should quote the exact pickup and destination. Ask how luggage, child seats and delays are handled.

03

Boats

Name both ends of the crossing

A ticket to Ilha Grande needs a mainland pier and an island landing. This route stays in Abraão. Ask whether the road transfer and boat are one coordinated booking, what happens if the first leg runs late and how services respond to weather restrictions.

04

Accommodation

Check the last stretch to the room

Paraty’s historic paving and Abraão’s paths can make wheeled luggage awkward. Confirm the exact access from the drop-off or landing, including steps and any available assistance. A room described as beachfront elsewhere on Ilha Grande may need a separate boat from Abraão.

05

Weather

Keep two full days on each coastal stay

The town and island each have three nights so that an excursion can change order. Ask providers about their cancellation terms and weather decisions before paying. Do not put the longest boat outing on the morning you need to leave for another base.

06

Adjustments

Add depth before another stop

With extra time, add a city day for museums and neighborhoods, or another island night for flexible sea conditions. With less time, remove a base. Adding a fourth coastal town without more nights would create another transfer and reduce the time that makes this route enjoyable.

The sequence is an editorial itinerary, not a packaged departure. Confirm current transport, activity access and booking terms for your travel dates.
