Historic streets. Landscapes on another scale.
São Luís in tile, music and color. White dunes holding seasonal lagoons, a delta threaded with mangroves, and rock shelters carrying traces of ancient lives. Maranhão and Piauí reward a journey built around the places themselves, with the travel days given room.
Choose your routeUnderstand the distances
São Luís and Lençóis Maranhenses make a rich first journey through Maranhão. The Parnaíba Delta adds a different coastal ecosystem, while Serra da Capivara lies far inland in Piauí and needs its own travel plan. These places belong together on a regional overview, but they do not belong automatically in one short holiday. Decide which landscape or cultural experience matters most, then make the route serve it.
Begin with several nights in São Luís, then choose a Lençóis base according to access, accommodation and the outings you want. Protect time for both. The city deserves more than a transfer stop, and a single hurried dune excursion gives you little flexibility for weather or the places farther from the first viewpoint.
The Delta can connect a Maranhão journey with Jericoacoara in Ceará when you have enough nights and properly arranged transfers. Compare the complete itinerary with an experienced operator, including where each boat or road segment begins. Keep time to experience the waterways rather than seeing the Delta only between hotels.
Give Serra da Capivara a dedicated chapter with several days for guided park circuits and museum time. Work backward from current gateway and road connections instead of attaching it as a day trip to the coast. The change in landscape and subject is a reason to go, and also a reason to plan it carefully.

01 · São Luís
São Luís brings tiled architecture, museum collections, reggae, bumba-meu-boi and a distinctive Maranhão table. Stay for several days so the historic center becomes more than a first walk between transfers. Choose a central pousada or a modern coastal base according to your everyday plans, then group visits and arrange the journeys between different parts of the island city.
Move between street detail and substantial interiors, with a current public event or community-led visit when available. Casa do Maranhão, Casa de Nhozinho and the Museu do Reggae offer different starting points. Let the program and your interests determine the day, and leave room for a meal that introduces regional ingredients.
Alcântara adds a separate historic-town outing when transport and conditions allow. Confirm the complete boat journey and return arrangements, including the effect of tides. Give the town time for a guided introduction and a meal, and avoid putting the crossing immediately before a flight or long onward transfer.

02 · Lençóis Maranhenses
Lençóis Maranhenses is a changing landscape of wind-shaped sand and seasonal freshwater lagoons. The view depends on rainfall and water levels as well as the part of the park you visit. Choose several nights and a suitable base, then arrange authorized outings with realistic walking expectations. A single photograph cannot promise the conditions for a particular week.
Barreirinhas offers a broad service base and river-linked outings. Santo Amaro provides another approach to the dune-and-lagoon landscape. Atins combines a village stay near the coast with its own final-transfer and sandy-street practicalities. Compare the actual accommodation, transport and daily excursions from each; they are different ways to experience the region, not interchangeable names on a booking page.
Check recent lagoon conditions and the current rules for your chosen route. Ask about walking distance, dune climbs, shade, water and the time spent in a vehicle. Use an authorized guide and transport where required, and follow protected-area instructions. For a longer crossing, discuss fitness and support separately from a short lagoon excursion.

03 · Parnaíba Delta
The Delta introduces mangrove channels, islands, dunes and communities across the Maranhão–Piauí coast. A boat journey makes sense of a landscape that roads only partly reveal. Choose a base and departure point before booking, and give the waterways a full outing with time around it. The experience is different from visiting Lençóis lagoons or staying beside the open ocean.
Compare route, group size, vessel, shade, meals and the time actually spent in different parts of the Delta. Porto dos Tatus in Ilha Grande, Piauí, and Tutóia in Maranhão provide different starting points. Confirm the precise departure and return arrangement. A quieter exploration of channels is a different product from a large group excursion with many passengers.
Birdwatching, mangroves and community-led visits add depth when handled thoughtfully. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife and avoid outings based on handling or disturbing animals. Ask who leads a community visit and how it is arranged. Allow the route to respond to conditions rather than demanding an encounter promised by a promotional image.

04 · Serra da Capivara
In inland Piauí, Serra da Capivara combines striking rock formations with an exceptional concentration of archaeological sites. The painted shelters are the reason to slow down and look carefully, with a guide who can explain what is known and where interpretation remains open. Plan several days around selected circuits and museum time, rather than treating the park as a single viewpoint.
Discuss the walking involved, terrain, heat and access with your guide before fixing the day. Some visitors will prioritize particular shelters; others may want a wider introduction to landscape and archaeology. Protect the paintings by following instructions and keeping hands away from the surfaces. The value lies in attentive observation, not in completing the greatest possible number of stops.
São Raimundo Nonato is a key reference point for planning the stay. Verify current flight and road options, guide availability and accommodation before connecting this chapter with the coast. Build in travel margins and time to rest. A museum visit can help connect the park’s individual sites with the larger questions of archaeology and human history.

Keep exploring
Choose a few places that offer a real contrast, then protect enough nights to experience them well. The right route leaves room for a city morning, another lagoon and a conversation that lasts longer than expected.
