São Paulo and its coast
Stand among a city’s extraordinary buildings. Stay for the art and the late dinner. Then follow the road toward coffee-port streets, island waters or a beach beneath the forest.
Choose your city and coastChoose the shape of the trip
The state of São Paulo offers several very different ways to combine a metropolis with the Atlantic. The city rewards museum days, historic architecture and time in its neighborhoods. Santos brings a port’s coffee heritage and a long urban waterfront. Farther along the northern coast, Ilhabela and Ubatuba suit longer beach stays. This guide joins them as travel choices, not as a claim that they all fit comfortably into one short circuit.
Our starting suggestion is four nights in São Paulo and three in either Ilhabela or Ubatuba, adjusting for your arrival and departure. Choose the island for its channel-side towns and organized outings, or Ubatuba for a mainland beach district. Count the transfer as travel time rather than promising yourself a full beach day on arrival.
If you have only a few days beyond São Paulo, Santos offers a different kind of coastal outing. Make a day trip around the coffee museum and historic center, or stay one or two nights for a morning and evening beside the waterfront. Its urban shore is part of its character.
A longer trip can combine the city with more than one coastal base, but the order should follow your flights and onward direction. Give Ilhabela’s ferry and Ubatuba’s long coast their own space in the plan. If you prefer fewer moves, spend the extra nights exploring from one room.

01 · São Paulo
São Paulo is a destination for the days between its skyline photographs: a museum that becomes a morning, carved stone above a busy street and a lunch that deserves its own plans. Stay in a neighborhood that supports the routine you want. Paulista, Pinheiros and historic Centro each offer a different starting point.
Paulista and Jardins are versatile for a first visit; Pinheiros suits a food-and-culture focus. Historic Centro rewards an architecture-led trip with attention to the exact block. The city guide compares those choices and several alternatives.
Give Centro, Paulista and Pinheiros separate blocks of time. Link a museum with a nearby meal and let the streets between them be part of the visit. A few satisfying days beat a sequence of distant landmark stops.

02 · Santos
The former coffee exchange gives Santos a grand architectural anchor, while old trams and commercial streets carry the story outside. The beachfront is another part of the city, with gardens, apartments and a daily seaside routine. A short stay lets you enjoy both without rushing back up to São Paulo.
Make the Museu do Café a substantial visit, then explore nearby façades and the current heritage tram route. Check the museum program and tram arrangements close to your date.
A room near a chosen beachfront stretch gives you a morning walk and an easier evening. Gonzaga and Ponta da Praia offer different settings. Plan the connection to Centro rather than assuming the two visit areas are adjacent.

03 · Ilhabela
Ilhabela brings sails on the channel, road-served beach towns and a more remote coast beyond the forest. Choose the base before booking the photograph in your imagination. A central west-coast room and an ocean-facing retreat can require very different arrival plans.
Perequê is useful for services and connections; Vila gives evenings a town focus. Beaches farther along the roads may suit a stay with a car. Remote settings need a clear arrival and meal plan.
The ferry from São Sebastião is one part of the journey, followed by the island road or another transfer. Leave space for queues and current conditions. Give a Castelhanos outing its own day and an authorized operator.

04 · Ubatuba
Ubatuba’s long coastline invites a choice between central services, southern beach districts and the surf-and-forest settings farther north. Pick one part and spend time there. The best beach day may be the one that begins a short walk from the room.
Centro and Itaguá favor services and restaurants. The southern beaches offer varied beach-based stays; Itamambuca draws surfers and travelers who want its broad strand. Check the exact approach and local food options.
A route joining several beaches can take longer than its distance suggests. Plan within a sensible stretch of coast, check current vehicle-fee arrangements and leave your onward transfer its own time.

Start planning the stay
Give the city a few days before choosing what follows. Compare neighborhoods, find the museum that interests you and make room for the evening meal. The coast will still be there when you are ready to leave.
