Nine days in Mato Grosso do Sul

Wetlands and clear water.

Begin with the Southern Pantanal’s wildlife and wide horizons, then follow the journey to Bonito’s spring-fed rivers. Give the two landscapes different days, with time to travel properly between them.

Gateway
Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul

One state, two landscapes

Wildlife first. Clear rivers next.

This route begins and ends in Campo Grande. Its eight nights divide into one in the city, three at a Southern Pantanal lodge, three in Bonito and a final night back in Campo Grande. That leaves two full lodge days and two full Bonito activity days, with the transfers treated as real parts of the journey. Choose the lodge before fixing the middle transfer: Southern Pantanal properties lie in different areas and do not share one road connection to Bonito. The route is designed for a varied wildlife stay, followed by guided river and nature activities. It does not include Porto Jofre or the northern Pantanal’s river-based jaguar circuit, which belongs to a different gateway and travel plan. A specialist jaguar program at a southern property is a separate product to investigate, rather than something to assume is included in an ordinary lodge package.

  1. 01
Choose this route for two kinds of nature

The contrast is the point: broad wetland landscapes and patient wildlife observation, then smaller groups moving through exceptionally clear rivers around Bonito and Jardim. Travelers interested only in a particular animal or demanding adventure activities may need a more specialized program and more nights.

  2. 02
Choose the lodge before the transfers

Ask exactly where the property is, which arrival route it uses and how the journey to Bonito works. A quote to the Southern Pantanal without the lodge name is incomplete. Compare included outings, meals and guiding language alongside the room, and explain your interests before the schedule is set.

  3. 03
    Book Bonito as a sequence

Many attractions use timed, guided visits with limited places. Reserve the activities that matter most, then fit transport and meals around them. Keep the two full days varied: one major flotation experience and one different nature outing can be more satisfying than repeating similar long excursions.

Days 1–4 · Campo Grande and the Southern Pantanal

Settle into the wetland day.

The first city night creates a clear starting point for the lodge journey. Arrange the transfer with the property or a provider who knows its current access, and confirm the pickup location and expected arrival window. Once at the lodge, use the guiding team’s local knowledge to choose the sequence of outings. Roads, water levels and the day’s conditions influence what works. A varied stay might include a vehicle safari, a walk, a boat outing or time observing birds near the property, depending on the lodge and season. Those possibilities are not interchangeable inclusions: read the package and ask what the particular stay actually offers. Wildlife appears on its own terms. Two full days allow repeated chances to notice the landscape, but they do not guarantee a sighting of any species. Keep some unstructured time for the lodge setting itself.

  1. 01
    Arrive in Campo Grande

Transfer to the city hotel, confirm tomorrow’s pickup and check any luggage limits for the onward vehicle. Use a nearby meal and an uncomplicated evening to settle in. A late arrival is a good reason for this opening night: it avoids turning an uncertain flight arrival into the start of a remote road journey.

  2. 02
    Travel to the lodge

Take the arranged transfer with water and essentials accessible. Ask the driver or lodge about comfort stops and the final road section rather than relying on a generic map estimate. After check-in, join an introductory outing only if the actual arrival and lodge schedule allow. Discuss the next two days with the guiding team.

  3. 03
Spend a full day observing wildlife

Follow the lodge’s suitable morning and later-day program, allowing time for meals and a rest between outings where the schedule permits. Bring binoculars and learn to notice birds, tracks and habitat as well as larger animals. Tell the guide what interests you, while allowing the sightings and conditions to shape the day.

  4. 04
    Choose a complementary outing

Use the second full day for a different habitat or type of activity if the property offers it. A boat journey, a walk and a vehicle outing reveal different things, but each depends on local access and the package. Confirm the next morning’s departure for Bonito and settle any separate activity charges before the final evening.

Days 5–7 · Bonito and Jardim

Follow the clear rivers.

Bonito is the overnight base for this route, while some well-known attractions lie outside town, including in neighboring Jardim. Three nights give you an arrival evening and two full days for prearranged outings. Choose the activity sequence by its actual content, not simply the number of attractions in a package. A flotation excursion typically combines preparation and equipment with a guided experience; the transfer and visitor facilities also take time. Another day can focus on waterfalls, a different river setting or a suitable dry-land visit. Read each attraction’s own participation requirements, equipment instructions and product restrictions rather than treating all clear-water tours as identical. A comfortable town base makes it easier to enjoy dinner and prepare for the next morning without adding another long drive. Leave evenings flexible enough to reflect how energetic the day has been.

  1. 01
Transfer from the lodge to Bonito

Reserve a complete door-to-door journey using the exact lodge location. Treat this as a travel day and avoid an activity booking that depends on an optimistic arrival. After checking in, confirm pickup times, required clothing and any documents for the following visits. Eat in town and keep the first evening simple.

  2. 02
Give one flotation visit your attention

Choose a guided clear-water experience that fits your confidence, mobility and the attraction’s participation rules. Arrive in time for the briefing and equipment fitting. Follow the guide’s instructions on movement, the riverbed and what products can be used. The experience is about observing the water and its life, not racing to cover distance.

  3. 03
    Choose a different nature day

Balance the first outing with waterfalls, another suitable landscape or a less physically demanding visit. If selecting a second flotation, compare what it genuinely adds to the first. Include the complete transfer and lunch arrangement in the day. Keep the evening free for a final town meal and preparation for the return journey.

Days 8–9 · Return to Campo Grande

Give the ending breathing room.

Travel back to Campo Grande on day eight and sleep there before the departure. This makes the final flight independent of a same-day journey from Bonito and avoids placing a last attraction between the hotel and the airport. Choose the return hotel according to the actual flight time and how you want to spend the evening. A central property can suit a useful meal and a short city visit; another location may simplify an early departure. If you would prefer to fly from Bonito, investigate the operating schedule and onward connection before changing the itinerary. That is a different ending, not an assumption this route makes. Keep the final morning proportional to the time available. The journey has already offered two distinct natural environments; it does not need an extra excursion to make the last day count.

  1. 01
    Return to the gateway city

Take the reserved transfer from Bonito, allowing time for the road and check-in. If the arrival leaves a comfortable afternoon, choose a nearby city stop or an unrushed meal. Keep flight details and transfer arrangements together for tomorrow. Avoid making a fixed evening booking depend on the shortest possible road journey.

  2. 02
    Depart from Campo Grande

Confirm the airline’s requirements and the route from the hotel to the airport. Leave time to collect stored luggage if relevant. A final breakfast can be the right ending to the trip; a more ambitious outing should only be considered if the actual flight schedule leaves ample room around the airport journey.

Plan the onward journey

Make the combination work

Connect the stays carefully.

The right lodge, a realistic middle transfer and reserved Bonito activities turn two appealing places into a coherent trip.

01

Nights

Keep the eight-night calculation

The route includes two Campo Grande nights, three lodge nights and three Bonito nights. Arrival and departure count within the nine days. Cutting both gateway nights changes the risk and timing of the trip, especially with separate flights. With fewer days, choose one natural region rather than removing all the useful time around the transfers.

02

Lodge

Compare the whole package

Ask which meals, activities and transfers are included, how outings are assigned and which guiding languages are available. Clarify whether departures are shared and whether a specialist wildlife interest requires a separate program. Check the exact room access and available assistance if mobility or heat tolerance affects what your group can comfortably do.

03

Roads

Confirm the middle leg by address

The Southern Pantanal is a region, not one departure point. Provide the lodge’s exact name and location when requesting the transfer to Bonito. Confirm the vehicle, pickup time, luggage allowance and meal or comfort stops. Ask how the operator handles changed road conditions, rather than expecting a general online travel-time estimate to apply.

04

Water activities

Read the attraction’s own requirements

Age, mobility, swimming confidence, equipment and health-related participation requirements vary by activity. Check the official conditions and discuss individual needs with the attraction before paying. Follow its instructions about sunscreen, repellent and other products; do not apply a blanket rule from one river to every excursion in the region.

05

Transport

Include the last stretch

A Bonito activity reservation may not include transport from the hotel. Confirm the pickup and return, especially for attractions around Jardim or farther into the countryside. Compare a shared service, private transfer or rental car using the whole itinerary. Leave enough room for the briefing and check-in rather than arriving at the activity start time.

06

Weather

Expect two kinds of seasonal change

Wetland access, animal visibility and the range of lodge activities can shift with water levels. Rain can also affect Bonito visits and river conditions. Ask the lodge and attractions what is realistic for your dates, and read cancellation or rescheduling terms. Choose a flexible sequence instead of treating clear water and a particular sighting as guaranteed.

07

Packing

Keep essentials available

Bring practical sun protection, binoculars for the lodge and footwear suited to each booked activity. Keep dry clothing and protection for electronics accessible on transfer and outing days. Ask what equipment is supplied before bringing bulky items. The lodge and attraction instructions should guide the final packing list more than a generic adventure checklist.

08

Wildlife focus

Separate a jaguar trip from a general stay

A varied Southern Pantanal lodge visit does not automatically include specialist jaguar tracking. If that is the main purpose of the journey, investigate the specific program, conservation approach and recommended stay. Porto Jofre’s northern river circuit uses a different gateway and should not be added as a casual detour to this route.

This is an editorial route, not a packaged departure. Confirm each provider’s current access, inclusions and participation conditions.
