Places to go in Brazil
Ocean cities and river journeys. Historic streets and immense open landscapes. Choose the part of Brazil that makes you want to stay.

Brazil becomes easier to plan when you choose the experience first and the map second. These twelve editorial regions are travel groupings, each with its own atmosphere and connections. They are not twelve stops to collect. Choose one as the heart of the trip, then add a neighboring place or a carefully chosen flight if the time allows. A city, a stretch of coast and a forest lodge ask for very different kinds of days.
Rio and the Costa Verde offer a strong city-and-coast combination. São Paulo adds major museums, historic architecture and a remarkable dining scene. Either can anchor a rewarding trip without trying to cross the country.
Let food, music, wildlife or architecture determine the region. Salvador, Belém, the Pantanal and Brasília offer different reasons to travel; the most rewarding choice may be the one closest to your interests.
Water levels, rain, wind and major holidays affect different regions differently. Choose a destination for the conditions you want, then check transport and accommodation before adding another place.

01 · Rio and the Costa Verde
Rio’s mountains and oceanfront give the journey its opening, but the Costa Verde offers a different kind of stay. Paraty brings historic streets, small restaurants and boat trips into island-filled bays; Ilha Grande trades city avenues for forest paths and beaches. Choose this region for a trip with a strong urban chapter and a slower coastal one. Each base deserves time beyond arrival and departure.
Beach neighborhoods, Centro’s cultural buildings and the major viewpoints belong to different outings. Start with four or five nights if the city is central to your trip, then add coast time around it.
Paraty suits travelers who want town life alongside the water. Ilha Grande suits a stay shaped by beaches, trails and boat connections. With limited time, choose one rather than rushing both.

02 · São Paulo and its coast
São Paulo rewards curiosity at street level: historic buildings in Centro, major collections around Paulista, Japanese food in Liberdade and very different evenings in Pinheiros and Bixiga. The state’s coast changes the pace. Santos adds port-city history; Ilhabela, Ubatuba and São Sebastião offer islands, forest and beaches. Give the capital its own days before treating the coast as an extension.
Group visits by area. A museum-and-food day in Liberdade or Luz is more satisfying than repeatedly crossing the city between individual attractions. Choose accommodation for the neighborhoods you expect to use most.
Santos works for urban culture beside the sea. Ilhabela involves a ferry; Ubatuba’s beaches spread along a long coastline. Check the complete transfer and the exact beach district before booking a stay.

03 · Minas Gerais
In Minas Gerais, the journey moves between baroque towns, contemporary art and a food culture that makes lunch worth planning around. Belo Horizonte offers a lively city base, while Ouro Preto and Tiradentes invite slower walks through streets shaped by mining wealth and colonial history. Inhotim brings art into a landscape of gardens near Brumadinho. Choose a few places with enough time to understand what connects them.
Ouro Preto’s hills and churches are best explored without a tight departure deadline. Tiradentes offers a smaller base with restaurants and nearby countryside. They are separate stays, not neighboring stops on a short walk.
Allow Inhotim a dedicated day rather than squeezing it between transfers. Choose the city, historic towns and museum visits that interest you most, then map the actual road connections.

04 · Salvador and Bahia
Salvador makes a compelling beginning: music, Afro-Brazilian history, historic architecture and cooking with a strong sense of place. Beyond the capital, Bahia opens in several directions. Boipeba offers an island stay, Itacaré pairs a town base with beaches and Atlantic Forest, and Chapada Diamantina brings an inland walking journey. Choose the version of Bahia that fits your interests rather than treating this large state as one compact circuit.
Give the city time for more than the Pelourinho photograph. Historic Centro, the waterfront and a neighborhood evening offer different perspectives. A good meal and a thoughtfully chosen cultural visit belong in the plan.
Island transfers, coastal roads and the journey inland to Chapada Diamantina require different arrangements. Add one clear second chapter, with enough nights to enjoy the place after getting there.

05 · Pernambuco and Alagoas
Recife and Olinda bring urban energy, museums, distinctive music and historic streets into one part of the journey. Farther along the coast, Pernambuco and Alagoas offer beach stays around places such as Porto de Galinhas, Maragogi and São Miguel dos Milagres. Decide how much of the trip should belong to cultural life and how much to the water; each choice changes the best place to stay.
Explore Recife’s different districts and set aside time for Olinda’s hills, churches and workshops. The two cities complement each other, but traffic and the afternoon heat deserve room in the day.
A hotel’s distance from the village, restaurants and the shore matters more than a broad resort-area name. Natural-pool outings depend on tides and local conditions; organize them around current guidance.

06 · Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte
Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte offer coastlines with strikingly different characters: Fortaleza’s urban waterfront, Jericoacoara’s dunes and wind, Natal’s city-and-beach setting and the cliffs around Pipa. Choose a base for the kind of days you want. Wind sports, a walkable beach village and a quiet stay above the sea do not automatically belong at the same address.
Fortaleza and Natal are different gateways, with substantial distances between the region’s best-known beach towns. With a shorter trip, spend more nights around one base and fewer days moving between airports and hotels.
Check beach access, walking distances, the final transfer and the conditions for your chosen activities. A cliff-top view and an easy stroll to the water are different accommodation advantages.

07 · Maranhão and Piauí
Maranhão and Piauí combine historic cities, changing coastal landscapes and journeys best planned around the water. São Luís offers tiled façades and a distinctive cultural life; Lençóis Maranhenses brings dunes and seasonal lagoons; the Parnaíba Delta introduces islands, channels and boat travel. These places can form a longer route, but none benefits from being reduced to a hurried stop between transfers.
Barreirinhas offers a larger service base, Santo Amaro brings a different approach to the dunes, and Atins has its own village-and-coast setting. Compare access and excursions before choosing accommodation.
Lagoon levels change with rainfall. Ask about current conditions and the routes that suit your dates. A Delta extension needs its own boat arrangements and travel time; it is not another Lençóis excursion.

08 · Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha is a dedicated island journey: dramatic headlands, beaches seen from above and days shaped by the Atlantic. Choose it when swimming, diving, snorkeling or coastal landscapes are a main reason for the trip. The island requires its own flights and budget, and access arrangements differ between beaches and protected sites. A few carefully chosen activities leave room to enjoy the setting between them.
Compare where you will sleep with beach access, restaurants and transport. Confirm the current island charges and park requirements through official channels before committing to the trip.
Sea conditions affect visibility, boat outings and beach access. Keep some flexibility around the activities that matter most. Choose a licensed operator for your experience level and follow local instructions around wildlife.

09 · The Brazilian Amazon
The Brazilian Amazon contains many different journeys. Manaus offers an urban starting point for river-and-forest stays; Belém introduces Pará through markets, food and waterways; Alter do Chão offers another setting around the Tapajós. Decide which place and experience you want before looking at an all-purpose Amazon package. These destinations are far apart, and a lodge’s location shapes almost every part of a visit.
Ask exactly where a stay is located, how long the transfer takes and which activities are included. A boat-based excursion, a forest walk and a community visit require different arrangements and guiding.
High and low water create different landscapes and possibilities. Choose your dates for the experience you want, then ask the operator about current conditions. Add proper city time if food and cultural history interest you.

10 · The Pantanal and Bonito
The Pantanal is a landscape for patient observation: birds, waterways and wildlife encounters shaped by the season and the skill of a guide. Bonito offers a different trip around clear-water rivers, caves and carefully managed excursions. They can complement each other, but they are separate destinations. Choose the activities and the part of the Pantanal first, then build the transport around those choices.
The northern and southern Pantanal have different gateways and routes. Ask about the habitats, daily outings and transfers available from a specific lodge. Wildlife sightings remain possibilities, never promises.
Excursions can have visitor limits and advance reservations. Check each activity’s requirements and the distance from your accommodation. A smaller number of well-chosen outings leaves more time to enjoy the water.

11 · Brasília and the Cerrado
Brasília offers a city journey built around modernist architecture, civic spaces and the scale of a planned capital. Beyond it, the Cerrado leads toward rocky trails, waterfalls and a very different daily pace around Chapada dos Veadeiros. Choose this pairing if buildings and landscapes both interest you. Give the capital and the walking destination distinct time, with the road journey clearly accounted for.
Group Brasília’s architectural visits by area and check current access to interiors that interest you. Large spaces on the map can mean long exposed walks; arrange transport around the route you actually want.
Alto Paraíso and São Jorge offer different starting points for the Chapada. Select walks for your group’s ability and confirm current access and weather with local guides or the park before setting out.

12 · Southern Brazil
Southern Brazil brings together immense waterfalls, city culture, an island coast and highland food-and-wine journeys. Iguaçu makes a destination in its own right. Curitiba offers a different urban stay; Florianópolis invites a trip organized around its varied beaches; farther south, the Serra Gaúcha and Porto Alegre lead into another regional story. Choose a coherent part of this large area rather than trying to collect every contrast.
If Iguaçu is the priority, give the falls complete days. If the coast matters most, choose a part of Florianópolis that suits your preferred beaches and evenings. These are different trips before they become a combined itinerary.
Flights and long road journeys can separate the region’s highlights. Compare the full travel day before adding another state, and keep room for the food, neighborhoods and landscapes around your chosen base.

Make it your Brazil
A well-chosen base gives you time for the market, the second museum and the evening you did not plan. Start with the region that interests you most, then make the connections work around it.
