Rio de Janeiro and the Costa Verde
Start above Rio’s rooftops. Follow the coast to Paraty’s painted doorways and the forest-framed beaches of Ilha Grande. Three different ways to spend your days, with the sea running through them all.
Find your place on the coastChoose the kind of stay
Rio and the Costa Verde work well together when each place gets a proper stay. Rio brings a big city’s cultural life, beach neighborhoods and mountain landmarks. Farther west, Paraty puts a historic town beside a bay of islands. Ilha Grande shifts the day toward boats, forest paths and the water. This is an editorial region joining the city to its coastal neighbors: Rio itself is separate from the Costa Verde. Choose for the time you actually have, including the journeys between beds.
For a first visit, our starting suggestion is four nights in Rio and three in either Paraty or Ilha Grande. Choose Paraty for evenings in town and a mix of land and water outings; choose the island when beach and walking days matter more. Arrival and departure times can change that balance. Do not squeeze both into the final three nights.
A longer stay can give Rio four or five nights and each coastal base three. Count a road-and-boat move as a travel day, even when individual legs look short. These are planning allocations, not a fixed timetable. Check your flights and actual transfers before choosing the order.
Return visitors can make the coast the main event. Give Paraty more time for town, bay and inland excursions, or settle into one part of Ilha Grande. A lodge across the island is a different proposition from a room in Abraão; the map of beaches is not a map of easy daily connections.

01 · Rio de Janeiro
Rio reaches beyond its famous summits. Walk Ipanema’s oceanfront, enter Centro’s cultural buildings and spend an evening in Santa Teresa or Lapa. Choose a neighborhood where the bakery, beach and dinner can become part of your stay.
Keep Corcovado and Sugarloaf flexible when possible. Low cloud can turn a viewpoint day into a museum day; check booking terms before committing.
Ipanema and Leblon favor beach time; Copacabana and Leme offer another long waterfront. Botafogo suits restaurants and connections; Santa Teresa brings hillside character and more transport planning.

02 · Paraty
Paraty’s painted streets open onto a much larger landscape. The port’s history includes colonial extraction and the trafficking of enslaved Africans; its beauty deserves that context. UNESCO recognizes Paraty and Ilha Grande together for their cultural and natural significance.
A central room favors walking to dinner. A secluded pousada may need transport for every outing. Ask about steps, old paving and the approach with luggage.
Leave a day for the bay or surrounding forest. Check the boat’s route, group size, boarding and return; confirm local guidance before a trail or waterfall outing.

03 · Ilha Grande
Your landing point shapes an Ilha Grande stay. Start by comparing Abraão’s rooms and boat connections. A remote beach can be the reason to come, but meals, luggage and onward transfers deserve as much attention as the view.
Lopes Mendes is inside the state park. A boat-assisted trip may still include the forest path from Pouso. Confirm the landing, walk and return arrangement.
Ask about steps, sand, connecting boats, meals and payment options, especially away from Abraão. Protect essentials from spray and save booking details offline.

04 · Getting along the coast
The mainland road leg and island crossing are separate connections. Compare the complete journey from your Rio room to the next one, including waiting and luggage. A combined transfer helps only if its operator confirms every handover.
Confirm departure town, pier, island landing and onward transport. Ask what happens if the road leg runs late or a sailing changes.
Leave a margin after the island: weather can change sailings, and holidays affect road traffic. Avoid relying on a same-day crossing before an international flight.

Leave a little space
The extra night changes what is possible: a second chance at a clear view, a walk without luggage, dinner with no onward departure to think about. Choose fewer bases when the calendar is tight. Rio, Paraty and Ilha Grande each deserve to feel like a place you stayed.
