Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral

Brazil's southern canyons

Grasslands end abruptly at vast stone walls. Forest fills the valleys below. Choose a highland base for the rims or a lower-valley stay for the river, then give the weather room to reveal the view.

Where to stay

Choose your side of the cliffs.

Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral are neighboring national parks across the Rio Grande do Sul–Santa Catarina border. The cliff tops and river valleys are close in a photograph but very different places to begin a day. Cambará do Sul is the familiar highland base for the Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza rims. Praia Grande in Santa Catarina serves the lower-valley approach to Rio do Boi. Do not confuse it with the city of the same name on São Paulo's coast. Decide which walks matter most before choosing accommodation; a nightly return across the escarpment can consume time you meant to spend outside.

  1. 01
    Cambará do Sul town

Choose town for a range of places to eat, access to guides and a practical base between highland outings. The park entrances still require road journeys. This suits a first visit centered on two separate rim days, with the option to change their order. Check your hotel's position and breakfast time if you have arranged an early guided departure.

  2. 02
    Rural highland accommodation

A cabin or pousada outside Cambará can make the grasslands and changing light part of the stay. Ask how the final road behaves after rain, what vehicle is appropriate and whether dinner is available. A rural address need not mean a closer journey to both parks. Choose it for the setting and time at the property, with the practical access established before arrival.

  3. 03
Praia Grande and the lower valleys

Look around Praia Grande in Santa Catarina when a Rio do Boi hike is the main purpose, or when you want to spend more time beneath the escarpment. A lower-valley base gives a different perspective from the plateau. If you also want both rims, compare the transfers carefully or split the stay. A route that changes altitude repeatedly is less relaxed than its map distance suggests.

01 · Aparados da Serra

Walk above the forest.

Itaimbezinho is the cleft that gives many travelers their first sense of the region's scale: near-vertical walls, waterfalls and a forested floor far below. The highland entrance serves rim walks; it is not the starting point for simply descending into the river gorge. Plan the day around the currently open Vértice and Cotovelo routes, choosing the amount of walking your group can enjoy. A shorter distance can still hold a long visit when you stop to watch the clouds move through the canyon. Give the view your attention before reaching for another location.

  1. 01
    Compare the two rim walks

Vértice gives a more compact introduction near the canyon's head, while Cotovelo extends the highland walk toward a different perspective along the gorge. Check the current map, distances and access at the entrance because closures and route arrangements can change. Allow time to return well before the trail's cutoff. A lookout photographed from a drone is not necessarily a place a visitor can reach on foot.

  2. 02
Give the viewpoints a little time

The first glance may reveal only a portion of the landscape. Move between the permitted viewing areas, pause and notice the waterfalls, vegetation and opposing wall. Stay on the designated route even where a photograph suggests a better angle beyond it. A canyon visit should not depend on standing at an unprotected edge. If visibility closes in, ask staff about conditions and the sensible remaining options.

02 · Serra Geral

Follow the edge of the plateau.

Fortaleza opens the landscape in a different way. The highland grassland meets an immense sweep of cliffs, and the changing wall faces give the canyon its name and character. Treat this as another full outing rather than the second half of a rushed two-park day. The drive, walking, weather and time at the viewpoints each deserve space. Ask about the current routes to the main lookout and the Pedra do Segredo and Tigre Preto area, selecting only those that suit the day's conditions and your group.

  1. 01
Choose your route before leaving the entrance

A main viewpoint walk and a longer route to a formation or waterfall have different demands. Confirm which paths are open, the latest return time and whether any section needs a guide or additional arrangement. Carry the day's water and food as advised; a map symbol for a service is not a promise that it will be available everywhere you walk.

  2. 02
Keep the return in the day's plan

The outward walk is only part of the effort, especially if wind, cold or damp ground develops. Leave enough daylight and energy for the return journey and the road to your accommodation. If conditions are excellent, enjoy the view without feeling obliged to add every possible path. One deeply memorable canyon day can be more rewarding than several unfinished walks.

03 · Rio do Boi

Enter at river level.

Rio do Boi offers a different experience of Itaimbezinho, following the river among boulders and rising walls from the Santa Catarina side. It is a substantial guided day with repeated water crossings, not a short path down from the rim. The park requires an accredited guide for this route. Arrange that guide and the correct park entry together, and describe your walking experience honestly. The effort includes balancing on uneven stones, moving through water and remaining active for much of the day. The reward is the sense of being inside a landscape previously seen from above.

  1. 01
Book the guide and entry as one complete plan

Confirm the meeting point, transport, admission, equipment and food arrangements in writing. Some excursions include the vehicle and guide while leaving the park ticket for you to purchase separately. Ask about current age limits, footwear and the exact physical demands. A confident walk on a city pavement tells you little about how comfortable you will feel on slippery rocks and river crossings.

  2. 02
    Accept the river's decision

Rain upstream and changing water levels can alter or close the route even if the morning at your accommodation looks inviting. Ask the guide about the cancellation or rescheduling process before booking. Never begin independently because an organized outing has been stopped. A spare day improves your options, but it does not make an unsafe river passable. Keep a lower-demand alternative available for the group.

04 · Beyond the canyon photograph

Notice the country between.

The plateau's open fields, patches of forest and distinctive araucaria silhouettes are part of this destination, not empty space on the way to a lookout. Slow down where stopping is permitted and give the guide time to explain the transition between highland grassland and forest. A shorter nature walk can add detail after a day spent looking at enormous walls. The wider Caminhos dos Cânions do Sul geopark also connects geology with communities and regional heritage. Choose a visit for what it helps you understand rather than simply searching for another dramatic edge.

  1. 01
Ask for a walk with a different purpose

A birding or landscape walk need not compete with the main canyon day. Tell the guide whether you are interested in plants, geology, photography or a gentler outing, and ask which currently accessible route fits. Listen for the explanation of how water and rock shaped the gorge while looking at the living landscape around it. Stay within the agreed route and leave plants, stones and wildlife undisturbed.

  2. 02
Make the town part of the stay

Return to Cambará or your lower-valley base for a meal and time to rest, instead of immediately planning another long drive. Ask about regional cooking and locally available ingredients, and choose a dinner that fits an early walking day. A small-town evening can be one of the pleasures of the trip. Arrange it deliberately when staying somewhere remote, where food service may depend on advance notice.

05 · Visibility, seasons and light

Leave room for the clouds.

Here, weather changes the experience as much as the route. Low cloud can hide a canyon that is only a few steps beyond the viewing point, while an opening in the mist can reveal the walls in successive layers. Clear skies are never guaranteed by choosing a particular month or hour. Plan several nights if the landscape is a major reason for the journey, check forecasts close to arrival and keep the order of rim visits flexible. The best itinerary has options inside the stay rather than relying on one short stop during a transfer.

  1. 01
    Separate visibility from walking conditions

A cloudy day is not automatically unsuitable for every outing, and sunshine does not remove the hazards of wet rock, wind or recent rain. Ask staff or your guide about the actual route conditions. Clothing should allow for cooler exposed areas and changes while you are away from shelter. Carry the rain and wind protection the guide recommends rather than assuming a warm morning will last.

  2. 02
Book special light only through the proper access

If sunrise is central to your photography plans, look for the operator's current authorized experience and its specific meeting arrangements. Ordinary daytime admission should not be treated as permission to enter before opening. Keep expectations realistic about visibility and understand weather-related changes before paying. For most visitors, a well-paced ordinary park day offers plenty to see without adding an exceptionally early departure.

06 · A complete canyon stay

Give each level its own day.

For a first highland visit, spend three nights around Cambará and keep two useful days for the rims. Add time if Rio do Boi is an important part of the trip, arranging its lower-valley access as a distinct outing or stay. Do not build an itinerary that depends on both national parks, a long river hike and an onward transfer fitting into one weekend. The region is most satisfying when you can respond to the weather and recover between substantial walking days. The road to the next destination should begin after the canyon experience, not halfway through it.

  1. 01
Choose the route by your main interest

For cliff-top landscapes with moderate walking, prioritize Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza and leave the river hike as a separate future trip if needed. For experienced walkers who want the gorge itself, protect a full Rio do Boi day and an appropriate base. For a mixed-ability group, arrange alternatives rather than expecting everyone to complete the hardest route. Compare the actual outing descriptions before deciding that one itinerary fits all.

  2. 02
    Build a distinct continuation

Gramado and Canela add town life and a different kind of waterfall visit; Bento Gonçalves adds wine country and rural heritage. Florianópolis changes the setting again with island shores and historic waterfront communities. Each connection requires real travel time. Choose the next place according to your available nights, and check current roads or flights before committing to a chain of accommodation bookings.

Before you arrive

Prepare for the walk you choose.

A clear base, current park information and suitable equipment matter more than a tightly packed list of viewpoints.

01

Park entry

Check each named entrance.

Use the current Cânions Verdes ticket information for the specific park and outing. Read the admission validity and included areas instead of assuming one ticket covers every experience. Keep booking confirmations available offline. Trails can have an earlier entry cutoff than the park's final closing time, so establish the walking window before setting your departure from the hotel.

02

Road access

Confirm the final stretch.

Ask your accommodation and guide about the current approach roads after recent weather, including the route across the escarpment if changing bases. Check suitability before taking a rental car onto an unfamiliar unpaved road. A navigation app's shortest line is not a guarantee of the best access. Allow the day for the complete transfer when arriving from a distant airport.

03

Guides

Match expertise to the outing.

For Rio do Boi, arrange an accredited guide and confirm the required park entry. For other walks, a local guide can add interpretation and help you judge a route, even when independent access is permitted. Ask about language, group size, transport and the current plan. Avoid choosing solely by the most dramatic photograph on a booking page.

04

Equipment

Dress for exposed and uneven ground.

Wear appropriate closed walking footwear and take layers, rain protection, drinking water and food suited to the route. For a river hike, follow the guide's specific equipment list and waterproofing advice. Carry only what you can manage comfortably over the full day. Confirm any equipment loan before arriving rather than assuming the operator will have your size.

05

Access

Ask about surfaces and gradients.

A viewpoint route, a highland trail and a riverbed hike are different propositions for mobility and stamina. Explain your needs and ask about the exact distance from drop-off, steps, rest points and assistance. Choose a rewarding accessible portion rather than relying on a general attraction label. A companion who cannot join a long hike needs a useful alternative day, not simply a place to wait.

06

Bookings

Leave one workable weather option.

Check rescheduling terms for guided activities and the nights available at your chosen base. Keep the most weather-dependent outing flexible within the stay, with a town or shorter nature day as an alternative. If the canyons are the purpose of the journey, more time in one base can be worth more than an additional distant destination. Confirm onward transport after the walking plan is realistic.
